Qatar welcomes Mandela Peace Summit

Qatar expressed its appreciation to the United Nations for convening the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, praising his role as a leader and symbol of humanity, in order to uphold the human values.This came in a statement delivered by HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit held in New York, on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.“The Summit is an opportunity to reflect on the life and heritage of the late Nelson Mandela,” the minister said, adding, “It reminds us of our responsibilities not only as members of the UN, but as human beings sharing one human value and one destiny.”He called for co-operation to achieve the goals of the UN, to meet with the legacy and mission of Mandela.He praised the struggle of Mandela, who carried on his back the concerns of his people and the future of humanity. “He was distinguished for supporting oppressed peoples, and dedication to defending humanitarian issues, for which he has become a symbol of freedom, justice, equality, reconciliation, human rights and peace.“Taking advantage of Mandela’s legacy to strengthen the UN in maintaining and promoting international peace and security requires us to learn from the path of this great human symbol, to apply the ideals and values he has advocated, to renew the commitment to promote human rights and to ensure development for all, as well as the prevention and settlement of conflicts by peaceful means and the achievement of sustainable peace “.HE Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi said that for Mandela peace was to create an environment in which everyone would flourish, regardless of their race, colour, creed or gender.
