The brilliant Battaash produced a fine sprint performance to win the King George Qatar Stakes (Gr2) on the fourth day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival yesterday even as Ryan Moore won two more races on the day to take his tally to five victories in this edition of the five-day festival. The Charlie Hills-trained four-year-old displayed a potent turn of foot to put the race to bed in a matter of strides, winning readily by four lengths under Jim Crowley. The son of Dark Angel was an easy two and a quarter-length winner of the race last year and became the eighth horse in history to win the five-furlong race on two occasions.Hills described the performance as “a career best”.Trainer Michael Stoute had two back-to-back winners on the day with Mirage Dancer taking the mile and four furlong Bombay Sapphire Glorious Stakes (Gr3) under Ryan Moore and Regal Reality winning the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Gr3) with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. The Queen enjoyed her second winner in successive years at the Qatar Goodwood Festival — Fabricate, trained by Michael Bell, won the opening race in 2017, while yesterday Seniority won the Unibet Golden Mile, trained by William Haggas. Seniority was Moore’s second success on the day, taking his tally of victories in this edition of the Festival to five.Haggas too tops the trainers’ list at the event with four wins after he too had a double on the day with the narrow success of Pretty Baby in the L’Ormarins Queens Plate Oak Tree Stakes (Gr3). It was also Haggas’ 50th winner at Goodwood.Ridden by Dane O’Neill, the three-year-old daughter of Orpen displayed a smart turn of foot in the closing stages to hold off the challenge of the fast-finishing Dancing Star by a neck.Local trainer Amanda Perrett landed the concluding race on day four, the Maltsmiths Handicap after the success of Desert Path in the 11-furlong event. The three-year-old son of Champs Elysees ran on strongly in the closing stages to score by a length and three-quarters under Dettori, who was registering a double on the day following Regal Reality’s victory earlier in the day.
