As President Rodrigo Duterte entered his second year in office, his special assistant, Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, ticked off the administration’s achievements in the last two years, including “numerous infrastructure and economic development projects.”“We have seen numerous infra and economic development projects, laws signed and implemented and social welfare, health and education programmes put into place in the last two years,” Go said. These, he added, were testaments “of what President Duterte clearly wants for the country and for the Filipinos.”“We don’t have ambitions of clinging to power, neither will we push for laws that would result to such,” Go said.“The president will always want a clean and graft-free government. And he has proven this many times by firing officials he appointed.”Inclusive growth and plucking millions of Filipinos from poverty were some of Duterte’s promises but recently, rising prices of goods, partly stoked by his new tax law, triggered an outcry from various groups, including labour. Some lawmakers have called for a review of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion and challenged the tax reform’s constitutionality before the Supreme Court. The government has assured the public that measures are in place to shield the poor from the impact of price spikes.
