Sheikha Moza calls for educating refugee children

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of the Education Above All (EAA) foundation and Advocate for the UN Sustainable Development Goals, participated on Wednesday in a high-level panel discussion organised by the foundation in co-operation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). 

She urged the global community to facilitate access to quality education for displaced children and to enforce severe penalties for perpetrators of armed conflict.The session was held at the UN headquarters in Geneva under the title "Quality Education for a Sustainable Future: A Comprehensive Approach for Refugees and Internally Displaced People."United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi attended the session. The discussion touched on the ways to ensure education for refugees and internally displaced persons, in order to build a prosperous future for all.Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser touring the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum on Wednesday with Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.Sheikha Moza spoke about the obstacles facing the education of refugee and displaced children which prevent them from contributing to the building of their communities. She added that education must be given priority as it is the tool for the children of the present and future. "A global approach needs to be adapted, in order to remove institutional barriers, which prevent the recognition and verification of refugee education," she said.Sheikh Moza said the increasing number of armed conflicts are targeting everything that is being built. "The world needs to unite in order to put an end to those who are encouraging armed conflicts and to impose stricter sanctions on them by the UN."Earlier, Sheikha Moza met with Grandi, where they discussed the joint efforts between EAA and UNHCR, which includes providing quality education to refugee children, such as establishing projects in 12 countries.
