The countdown to the event at the Ooredoo headquarters in West Bay.
For the ninth year in a row, Ooredoo joined companies and monuments around the world in marking Earth Hour by switching off all the lights and non-essential systems at its HQ1 tower in West Bay, for an hour from 8.30pm on Saturday. This year, Ooredoo teamed up with Global Shapers Community (GSC) Mena to create a countdown to the event at its headquarters. After the countdown, the Ooredoo tower plunged into darkness and Ooredoo and Global Shapers Community volunteers surrounded its entrance with candles, “highlighting the company’s commitment to protecting the environment”, it said in a statement.Ooredoo was the first company in Qatar to publicly commit to Earth Hour in 2009 and has since grown its Earth Hour events to involve more people and companies than ever, the statement noted.Earth Hour is a worldwide initiative that has grown from a single lights-off event in Sydney in 2007 to a global event that engages more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide.Manar Khalifa al-Muraikhi, director of PR and Corporate Communications at Ooredoo Qatar, said: “Ooredoo is proud to once again be supporting such an important message and reminding the people of Qatar the importance of energy conservation and environmental awareness. This year, we’re proud to have teamed up with Global Shapers Community Mena, to reach out to young people and begin a new partnership.”GSC Mena is an initiative of the World Economic Forum, led by young people between the ages of 20 and 33. The Global Shapers Community was founded in 2011 and has more than 7,395 members in around 158 countries across the world.
