HBKU’s seminar on media translation

The Translation and InterpretingInstitute (TII), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Collegeof Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), will be offering an innovativecommunity workshop that aims to enhance participants’ mediatrans-editing skills. Led by Dr Ashraf Abdel Fattah, instructor atTII, Translating News and Views: Media Translation’s Art of Mediation isa specialised four-day workshop, which will be conducted in bothEnglish and Arabic and commence on February 25 at Education City.Idealfor prospective translator-journalists looking to expand theirunderstanding of best practices within the growing media industry, theprogramme is open to all interested members of the public. NabeelRashid, translation reviser at TII said, “In our upcoming workshop,participants will gain first-hand knowledge into media translation andattain theoretical, practical, and critical thinking skills that arecommonly applicable to all sub-specialised fields of translation. Wewelcome all interested applicants to register for this workshop, wherethey can broaden their professional skill set and refine their knowledgeof concepts that are becoming increasingly relevant to the needs of thegrowing market.”In the workshop, Dr Abdel Fattah will impart bothacademic knowledge and hands-on experience to help participants interacteffectively with the central forms of journalistic text. Programmeattendees will learn to critically analyse selected news stories andmedia translation samples, focusing on their characteristic linguistic,rhetorical, and discursive features. They will also gain insight intothe role of the translator-journalist as a mediator, negotiator, andnarrator of news stories; and will be able to understand the ideologicaland cultural implications of media translation.The course will bedivided into four days’ worth of three-hour segments, the first of whichwill explore the various types, genres, and modes of media texts,including audiovisual and social media. The second part will address theproblems, difficulties, and challenges commonly encountered by mediatranslators and interpreters, highlighting the structure of news storiesand the nature of trans-editing. The third and fourth parts willprovide participants with an opportunity to analyse media translations.Theupcoming workshop is the latest in a series of community developmentcourses that HBKU routinely offers. CHSS is committed to developinghuman capacity in Qatar and the region in regards to its enrolledstudents and the broader community. The college offers a wide array oftrainings and language courses for adults and children alike throughoutthe academic year.
