QU conducts sporting and fitness activities

HE the Minister of Development Planning and Statistics Dr Saleh Mohamed Salem al-Nabit and Qatar University (QU) president Dr Hassan al-Derham, staff, faculty, students and their families participated in the National Sport Day yesterday.Through its Sports and Recreation Section in the Student Activities Department, QU conducted a series of sporting and fitness events on its campus and at Katara.The activities headlined “#sports_unite_us” aimed to promote sports and healthy lifestyles throughout the community. They were organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, Community College of Qatar (CCQ), Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), and Katara, the official host.At QU Women’s Sports Hall, QU female students and staff participated in fitness and aerobics activities.At Katara, the activities programme included physical and fitness training for kids and adults, as well as sports and health awareness activities. An exhibition on the sidelines featured health booths staffed by members from QU College of Health Sciences and QU Sport Science Programme in conjunction with QU Physiotherapy and Sport Injuries Section at the Student Activities Department. Visitors were provided with information on sportive and healthy lifestyles, fitness, and nutrition, as well as free testing of vital signs and body composition. A booth for women was presented by QU female coaches with the aim to raise awareness on the importance of physical activity for women.Also on the programme were self-defence and equestrian performances and cross-fit activities presented by Lekhwiya, as well as various sports activities that suit all ages organised by CCQ and supervised by student volunteers.Dr al-Derham said,“Qatar University is keen to strengthen its presence in the local community. To achieve this, the university has built a large number of partnerships and collaborations with government institutions. Our participation in the National Sports Day highlights our commitment to raise community awareness about the importance of sports in the daily life and health-related issues.”CCQ president Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Naimi said, “This participation plays an important role in driving forward the partnership between governmental institutions and organisations from civil society. This partnership contributed to uniting our efforts to reach the largest segment of the public through the organisation of various sports activities which attracted thousands of citizens and residents of all ages to commemorate this annual event. The National Sport Day is the cornerstone to build an active and healthy community at the physical, social and mental levels. The Community College of Qatar is keen to encourage its students to participate in the events of the National Sports Day and to make physical activity a part of their daily lives due to its positive impact on their academic achievements.”
