The College of Science and Engineering (CSE), Hamad Bin KhalifaUniversity (HBKU), concluded its computer engineering winter camp,Innovate.Create, with a special awards ceremony recently. Focused on one of the most consequential fields of modern times, theprogramme saw the participation of 24 high school juniors and seniorsfrom various schools in Qatar.Participants learned about the development and significance of computerengineering as a field, underwent crash courses in cybersecurity androbotics, and engaged in group work on practical engineering projectsand application development, working effectively with graduate studentsand faculty from the Information and Computing Technology division atHBKU’s College of Science and Engineering.Dr Mounir Hamdi, dean of CSE, said: “We believe that the successes wewill achieve tomorrow will depend on our ability to embrace the fastpace of technological development today. Through the Innovate.Createprogramme, we have worked with high school students who were evidentlyinterested in exploring the computer engineering field.” Innovate.Create provided participants with hands-on experience acrossthree core programme areas. In the first session of the programme, whichfocused on robotics training, students worked on the basic hardwareused in the construction, operation and use of robots. On the third day of the programme, students explored various computersecurity issues, how they started, the different security protocols andhow security systems work. On days four and five, the participantscovered the foundation of programming, mobile application design, andmobile application development.Nour Elhouda Tabet, a programme instructor, said: “Our main objectivewas to provide students with a full experience in the field of securityand mobile application development in a manner that was at onceinteractive, fun and informative. Throughout my interactions with ourstudents, I sensed the great engagement and the energy that theyexpressed – and this was particularly rewarding.” In addition to the awards ceremony that recognised the efforts ofoutstanding students, all participants were issued a certificate ofcompletion.
