Scientific team to conduct study in northwest region

AQatari research team accompanied by foreign researchers have started ascientific research trip to the northwestern regions of Qatar, includingFasht Edibil and neighbouring areas, on board the Qatar University’sadvanced research vessel Jinan.The aim of this scientific trip is toconduct a detailed survey of the environmental and biological diversityof the region, as well as to study deep marine sediments, watermovement and distribution of sea currents, in addition to air quality.Thestudy will provide new information on these areas, which are consideredto be important food reserves as well as their nature, which is atarget for tourism investment. Director of Qatar University’s Center forEnvironmental Sciences Dr Hamad al-Saad al-Kuwari said in remarks thatthe trip represents the launch of one-year research project to study thenorthwest region.The aim of this project is to create a databasethat will benefit the public and private sectors in investing in theeconomic potential of the region such as fish development, fish farmingand tourism investments, he added.He pointed out that the Centre forEnvironmental Sciences is in contact and co-operation with a number ofgovernment agencies, such as the Ministry of Municipality and theEnvironment, that benefit from the large database available in theCentre, which was collected through decades of studies.Dr Ibrahimal-Ansari, a researcher at the project, said that the marine studieshave not been affected by the siege, but have increased in terms offrequency and quality, especially with regard to studying marinecurrents, and the possibility of generating electricity from thesecurrents.
