Abbas briefs Emir on US move on Jerusalem

HisHighness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a writtenmessage from the President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas,pertaining to the latest developments in the Palestinian arena and thepossibility of the US administration to recognise Jerusalem as thecapital of Israel or the transfer of the US embassy in Israel from TelAviv to Jerusalem. The ambassador of Palestine to Qatar MunirAbdullah Ghannam delivered the message during a meeting with HisHighness the Emir at Al Bahr Palace yesterday.During the meeting,the Emir affirmed the State of Qatar’s firm stance on the Palestinianissue in general and Jerusalem in particular because of its religiousand political importance to Arabs, Muslims and the whole world. Qatar has totally rejected any measure calling for the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.Anofficial source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statementto Qatar News Agency (QNA) that such measures undermine theinternational efforts aiming at the implementation of the Two-Statesolution.The source reiterated Qatar’s firm position in support ofthe Palestinian cause and the rights of the brotherly Palestinianpeople, foremost of which is the establishment of an independent andsovereign state on the basis of the 4 June 1967 borders with Jerusalemas its capital.  Meanwhile, the extraordinary session of the Councilof the League of Arab States, at the level of permanent delegates,began yesterday at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat todiscuss developments affecting Jerusalem and its legal and historicalstatus.Qatar participated in the meeting with a delegation headed byPermanent Representative to the Arab League Saif bin Muqaddamal-Buainain.The meeting discussed the formulation of an Arabposition to confront threats and challenges facing Jerusalem, itsidentity and its historic status.
