Workers operate on the Mulholland bridge during the partial demolition of the bridge over the 405 freeway in Los Angeles yesterday. A 10-mile (16-km) stretch of the freeway will be closed in both directions from July 15-18 for the partial demolition of the Mulholland bridge. The unprecedented 53-hour shutdown, expected to delay motorists for hours on alternative routes with ripple effects on about a dozen other major highways, will allow crews to demolish the bridge as part of a $1bn freeway-widening project.
