Nepal protester killed in clash with police

A 30-year-old man was shot dead yesterday by police at a protest demanding action against the killers of a 11-year-old boy in southeastern Nepal.Hundreds of angry protesters clashed with police yesterday in the town of Birtamod forcing the authorities to impose a curfew, senior police officer Jitendra Kumar Basnet said.The deceased has been identified as NawarajThapa aka Rajesh, 32, of Arjundhara Municipality-11. Incapacitated in the police firing, Thapa breathed his last on the way to the Mechi Zonal Hospital. “They attacked government vehicles and police officers. Six protesters have been injured,” he said.Siwakoti, who had gone missing on the day of Dashain Tika, was found dead the next day.Basnet said the body of the 11-year-old was found in a bush three weeks ago; the boy’s relatives protested saying that police investigation has been slow.“We have arrested three people in connection with the murder. We have been investigating the case, but the protesters turned violent and defied the curfew,” he said, adding that situation was under control after the incident.Four protesters were killed and several injured when police opened fire at a political rally in early March in southeastern Nepal.
