Mega Reservoirs Project second phase ‘to boost Qatar’s water security’

The second stage of the ‘Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project’ willsoon begin as part of Qatar’s plan to achieve water security, MohamedTahir Jamil, projects engineer, told Qatar Urdu Radio’s live showHaqeeqat yesterday.“The crisis has had no impact on mega projects of Qatar,” he assertedwhile explaining that the demand for water in Qatar has grown steadilywith increasing population. “It is estimated that the demand for water is going to double by 2022,”Jamil said, adding that Qatar is the first country to work on mega waterreservoir projects of this kind.In a major step towards achieving water security, the Qatar GeneralElectricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is building five primaryreservoir and pumping stations. The first phase of the project, will deliver storage capacity of about2,300mn gallons of water in 24 huge concrete reservoirs and some 480kmof buried ductile iron pipelines with diameter up to 1.6m. Second stageof the project will include construction of additional pipelines and 16new reservoirs within the five mega sites to achieve an ultimate totalstorage capacity of about 3,800mn gallons of water, Jamil added.Haqeeqat, which aims to engage and interact with the large South Asianexpatriate community in Qatar, is a joint venture of Gulf Times andQatar Media Corporation Urdu Radio.
