The South African film One Humanity, which tells the story of how the world came to focus on the ending of the apartheid regime, will be screened at the Drama Theatre of Katara – the Cultural Village tomorrow, South African ambassador SM Soni has announced. The film screening, in co-operation with the embassies of Algeria, Cuba, Ethiopia, India and Palestine, will start at 7pm with an introduction by the producer of the film, AB Moosa.   “South Africa wishes to send a clear message of solidarity with the government and people of Qatar and to show the power of culture in conveying the message of peace,” the envoy said in a statement.Citing the collaboration of five partner embassies in Doha, he stressed that his country “will be forever grateful for the role the international community played in the liberation of the people of South Africa.”According to Sona, the film also narrates the role played by two star-studded concerts in the process of ending apartheid, which were aired around the world in 1988 and 1990. He explained how the African National Congress overcame numerous obstacles to put on the concerts honouring the late President Nelson Mandela and how 700mn people were able to watch the concert in the end.One Humanity explores how these added to the pressure on the South African government, which was weakened by a series of uprisings within the country, the erosion of western support and the end of the Cold War, and how this led to the country’s first-ever democratic elections in April 1994.
