Conforto hits two home runs, as Mets beat Mariners 7-5

Michael Conforto hit two home runs as the New York Mets defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-5 at the Major League Baseball on Friday night. Conforto, a native of nearby Redmond, Washington and playing a major league game at Safeco Field for the first time, led off the third and eighth innings with solo homers.His eighth-inning liner off Marc Rzepczynski tied the score at 5-5. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a single off David Phelps (0-1), the fourth Seattle pitcher, before Yoenis Cespedes looked at a called third strike. Jay Bruce, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning, singled to right but was then forced out at second on a fielder’s choice by Wilmer Flores.Giants 6, Dodgers 4Corey Seager slugged a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, his second of the game, to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to another late come-from-behind win, this time over the San Francisco Giants.Trailing 4-2, the Dodgers got doubles from Joc Pederson and Chris Taylor to tie the game and set Seager up for the game-winner. Los Angeles only had two hits off Giants starter Matt Moore (3-11) through six innings before Pederson’s double knocked him out of the game. George Kontos relieved and induced Yasiel Puig into a run-scoring groundout, but then gave up Taylor’s double to left to tie the game.Twins 6, Athletics 3Left-hander Jaime Garcia threw 6 2/3 solid innings and picked up a victory in his debut for the Minnesota Twins, who defeated the Oakland Athletics and ended their four-game losing streak on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Oakland Coliseum.Garcia (5-7) allowed three runs and eight hits, struck out seven and walked two. He was acquired along with catcher Anthony Recker from the Atlanta Braves on Monday in a trade for minor-league pitcher Huascar Ynoa. Jason Castro had two RBI doubles and scored a run for the Twins. Ehire Adrianza went 2-for-3 with a walk, drove in a run and scored once.Padres 3, Pirates 2Travis Wood pitched six solid innings and added an RBI single in his Padres debut, lifting San Diego over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Cory Spangenberg had two extra-base hits for the Padres, one of which drove in a run.Three Padres relievers pitched the final three innings to combine with Wood on a three-hitter. Brad Hand worked the ninth for his sixth save as he extended his scoreless-innings streak to 19 1/3 innings.Royals 4, Red Sox 2Jason Vargas pitched out of a July slump and Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas homered, carrying the Kansas City Royals to their ninth straight win, a 4-2 victory over the struggling Boston Red Sox on Friday night.The loss dropped the Red Sox, losers of five of their last six, out of first place in the American League East for the first time since June 29, falling a half-game behind the New York Yankees. Boston is 6-9 since the All-Star break.Vargas, an All-Star who followed a 6-1 June with a 9.45 ERA in three July starts, allowed a run on five hits through six innings to raise his record to 12-4. Four relievers finished up, with Kelvin Herrera working the ninth for his 22nd save. Perez hit a solo homer off Rick Porcello (4-14) in the second inning and Moustakas then banged his 30th of the year with two men on in the fourth.  The Royals, who came into the game two games behind the equally hot Cleveland Indians in the AL Central, have outscored their opposition 67-29 and outhomered their foes 20-2 during the winning streak.Yankees 6, Rays 1Masahiro Tanaka retired the first 17 hitters and set a career high with 14 strikeouts in eight dominant innings as New York beat Tampa Bay for its fifth straight win. Brett Gardner, Aaron Judge and Clint Frazier homered off Austin Pruitt but it was all about Tanaka as the Yankees won for the eighth time in 10 games and improved to 10-5 since the All-Star break.Didi Gregorius added an RBI single for New York’s final run. Tanaka (8-9) allowed a run and two hits and did not walk a batter. He lost his perfect game bid when Adeiny Hechavarria hit his 69th pitch just past the diving attempt of shortstop Gregorius and into center field. Tanaka then rebounded and struck out Mallex Smith for a third time to reach 10 strikeouts.Astros 6, Tigers 5Josh Reddick cracked a three-run homer in the eighth inning and also had two sacrifice flies for a five-RBI night that rallied Houston to a victory over Detroit. Bruce Rondon (1-2) gave up two singles and Reddick’s 10th home run of the season, on a hanging slider, as he blew a 5-3 lead turned over to him by Jordan Zimmermann. Zimmermann gave up six hits and three runs in seven innings.It was Detroit’s fourth loss in a row and plopped the Tigers a season-low 11 games below 500. Brad Peacock (9-1), displaced from the rotation by Dallas Keuchel, picked up the win after four innings of three-hit, two-run relief. Chris Devenski pitched the eighth and Ken Giles claimed his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth.Angels 7, Blue Jays 2Parker Bridwell allowed three hits in 7 1/3 innings and CJ Cron hit a two-run homer as Los Angeles defeated Toronto. The victory by the Angels in the opener of a three-game series stopped their three-game losing streak and ended a four-game winning streak by the Blue Jays.In making his eighth major league start and ninth appearance, Bridwell (5-1) allowed one run, one walk and struck out four en route to his third straight win. Kaleb Cowart had three hits and an RBI for the Angels. Justin Smoak homered for the Blue Jays. Toronto starter JA Happ (3-8) remained winless since July 4 when he allowed five hits, four walks and three runs while striking out five in six innings.Phillies 10, Braves 3Philadelphia scored seven runs and hit three homers in an explosive fifth inning to roll over Atlanta. The offensive outpouring helped get Jake Thompson (1-0) a win in his first major league start of the season.Less than 30 minutes before the first pitch, the Phillies announced scheduled starter Jeremy Hellickson was scratched but did not disclose a trade or injury. The Phillies already led 1-0 before Aaron Altherr, the first batter in the Phillies’ fifth, launched a home run into the second deck of the left field seats. He hit another solo homer in the eighth inning, his 16th of the season. Marlins 7, Reds 4JT Realmuto snapped a tie score with a seventh-inning solo homer down the left-field line as Miami rallied to defeat Cincinnati. Realmuto came back from a bases-loaded strikeout in the first inning and ended up with a huge game, finishing a triple shy of a cycle.He went 3-for-4, including his career-high 12th homer of the season. The Marlins have won six of their past eight games. Cincinnati has lost five games in a row and 13 of its past 15. The Reds have lost seven straight games at Marlins Park. Dusty McGowan (6-1) earned the win with one scoreless inning of relief. Wandy Peralta (3-2), who gave up Realmuto’s homer, took the loss.Indians 9, White Sox 3Jose Ramirez had four hits with a homer and three RBIs and Danny Salazar struck out eight and allowed only three hits as Cleveland won its eighth straight game. Salazar (4-5) didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning before he departed in the seventh after allowing a two-run homer to Matt Davidson.By then, the Indians had plenty of breathing room en route to handing the White Sox their fourth straight loss and 16th in their last 18 games. Making his fifth start in place of right-hander Chase Anderson, Suter (2-1) held the Cubs to four hits and a walk.He outdueled Cubs lefty Jose Quintana (2-1), who took his first loss since being traded from the crosstown White Sox after giving up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings.Anthony Rizzo created drama in the ninth, drawing a leadoff walk against Brewers closer Corey Knebel.But Rizzo was left stranded at third when Knebel struck out pinch-hitter Kyle Schwarber for his 18th save of the season.Cardinals 1, Diamondbacks 0Jedd Gyorko’s one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Tommy Pham with the only run of the night as St. Louis edged Arizona. Pham led off the inning by reaching on an error by third baseman Daniel Descalso.After stealing second, Pham moved to third on Paul DeJong’s groundout. Gyorko lined a 2-2 pitch off Rubby De La Rosa into center field. Michael Wacha (8-4) worked six scoreless innings for his fifth win in six starts. Wacha allowed only three hits and a walk, striking out five. Reliever TJ McFarland (4-3), who came in after Robbie Ray was struck in the head with a liner in the bottom of the second, was tagged with the loss.Rangers 8, Orioles 2Adrian Beltre inched closer to 3,000 career hits and Nomar Mazara had a career-high three doubles as Texas pounded Baltimore. Mazara’s two-run double in the first inning got the offense going as Texas never looked back in support of Andrew Cashner (6-8). Beltre also had a hand in the rout, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs to put him at 2,998 career hits.The Orioles, who swept a four-game series against Texas earlier this month, have now lost three straight and five of their last seven. Texas led 8-0 after five innings, scoring all eight runs against Baltimore starter Chris Tillman (1-6).
