A defiant Borough Market reopened “as a stronger family” yesterday with a one minute silence to honour the victims of the terrorists who rampaged through it 11 days ago.Business owners and market stallholders linked arms during the tribute before ringing a bell at 10am to declare the venue back open for business following the atrocity.Within minutes, the familiar hubbub broke out across the 1,000-year-old marketplace close to London Bridge where the attack began. Eight people were killed by three terrorists armed with knives before the terrorists were shot dead by police on June 3. Chair of Borough Market, Donald Hyslop, introduced the minute’s silence and at just before 10am, the crowds bowed their heads to remember the victims. Poet Suley Muhidin then performed a piece about the market.Addressing the crowds, Hyslop said: “We will not forget those who lost their lives. We welcome you back to Borough Market. We welcome and we thank from the bottom of our hearts the police force and emergency services. We are thinking of them at north Kensington this morning.“We thank you for your love and support our fellow citizens from our diverse city. We give this place back to you with love.”To the sound of applause, he added: “Come here today. Come here at the weekend, come when you can. London is open. Borough Market is open.” The market will also open on Sundays for the next two weeks.Traders said the lifting of police cordons and the return of customers marked the beginning of a healing process.
