The majority of the Padres entered Globe Life Park among the uninitiated. Two members of their lineup had faced Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish and his dizzying array of pitches. The other seven had not.A lack of familiarity sliced both ways. Of the Rangers’ starters, only catcher Jonathan Lucroy had batted against up-and-comer Luis Perdomo, in a pair of plate appearances for Milwaukee last season. The two pitchers duelled to a draw Wednesday. After six innings, Darvish had allowed three runs on six hits. Perdomo had allowed three runs on six hits. The final outcome would be decided in a test of bullpens and defenses. In a 4-3 loss, the Padres blinked first. A throwing error by Yangervis Solarte allowed Delino DeShields to score the tie-breaking run in the seventh. The Rangers preserved a narrow lead, sending San Diego to a come-from-behind defeat. Matt Bush, the former bust whom the Padres drafted first overall in 2004, pitched around a two-out double in the ninth to collect the save against his hometown team.DeShields’ run was his second of the game, as well as his second thanks to a Padres miscue. With two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth, the Rangers left fielder bluffed off third. Startled, Perdomo shuffled his feet off the pitching rubber, committing a balk. DeShields trotted home with the tying run. The score was 3-3.Before then, the Padres had led much of the way. With two outs in the opening inning, Wil Myers worked the count full. Darvish threw a fastball over the middle of the plate. Myers, one of the two Padres who had previously faced the right-hander, swung and connected.A 425-foot drive soared over the fence in left-center. A little more than a month into the season, Myers had launched his eighth home run and sixth on the road. Last season, he struggled away from Petco Park, with 10 home runs and a .633 on-base plus slugging percentage.Perdomo began his start by allowing consecutive singles. The first came around to score on a wild pitch, making it 1-1.In the top of the second, the Padres showed more power. Erick Aybar, the other hitter with history against Darvish, attacked a first-pitch heater up in the zone. He, too, connected.Aybar’s fourth home run this year traveled 413 feet, reaching the upper deck in right. It was his second homer off Darvish in 27 at-bats.A pair of far less experienced teammates pounced next. Hunter Renfroe lined a single to left. Matt Szczur, making his first start for San Diego in left field, placed a double in the right-center cap, driving in Renfroe. The Padres had taken a 3-1 lead.Darvish settled in from there. He did not allow a run over his final four innings. Szczur, whom the Padres acquired from the Cubs on Monday, singled in his ensuing two at-bats, tying his career high in hits, but was stranded each time.Perdomo allowed the leadoff batter to reach in four of his six frames. In the fifth, the traffic caught up to him again. After two walks and a fielder’s choice, Shin-Soo Choo singled in a run. Moments later, DeShields received a gift.In the seventh, with Brad Hand on in relief of Perdomo, the Padres had a chance at an inning-ending double play. But after securing the out at second base, Solarte yanked his throw to first. The ball sailed wide of the bag. DeShields scored the go-ahead run.Ryan Schimpf nearly tied the game in the eighth, but his deep drive went wide of the right-field foul pole. In the bottom of the inning, reliever Jose Torres was struck on the right forearm by a liner. He walked off the field alongside a trainer.ResultsNationals 7 Orioles 6Blue Jays 8 Indians 7Dodgers 5 Pirates 2Brewers 7 Red Sox 4Cardinals 7 Marlins 5Diamondbacks 7 Tigers 1Rays 12 Royals 1Giants 6 Mets 5Astros 4 Braves 2Rockies 3 Cubs 0Mariners 11 Phillies 6Athletics 3 Angels 1Rangers 4 Padres 3
