DCMF takes part in press freedom day workshops

A delegation from Doha Centre for Media Freedom, led by acting director-general Abdulrahman Nasser al-Obaidan, is currently in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to participate in Unesco’s World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) event.Members of the delegation have attended sessions taking place on the sidelines of the conference, which focused on subjects such as defending human rights, working towards protecting the safety of journalists and providing effective media and information literacy education for youth as well as press freedom in East Asia in general.The team is also set to meet with a number of officials and representatives from other press freedom organisations, such as the International Federation of Journalists, to discuss the potential for partnership and collaboration in the future.The main theme of this year’s event, “Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies”, brings together experts from across the world to discuss the major challenges facing media freedom and share experiences and best practices for addressing these obstacles.The event is being held in Southeast Asia for the first time in 15 years, with the organisers stating that the decision to hold the World Press Freedom Day celebration in Indonesia was an indication of the country’s commitment to promoting media freedom and quality journalism.
