Six Qatari students join research programme at WCM-Q

Six new Qatari graduates have joined Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar’s (WCM-Q) Biomedical Research Training Programme for Nationals, it was announced yesterday.The six-month training programme, which runs from January to June each year, provides comprehensive instruction and work experience to recent Qatari graduates in WCM-Q’s laboratories. Working with the college’s research scientists, the interns learn a wide variety of competencies including practical lab skills, how to undertake clinical research and research administration.This year’s interns are Alreem Alhayder, a sociology and mass communication major from Qatar University (QU); Amal Ibrahim, Fatima al-Dasim, and Shaikha al-Abduljabbar who graduated in biomedical sciences from QU; Kholoud al-Najdi, a chemical engineering graduate from Texas A&M at Qatar; and Wadha al-Marri who majored in biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.The programme offers a solid grounding in the basic skills to work in the research field and gives the interns the opportunity to contribute to real research projects being conducted at WCM-Q.Dr Khaled Machaca, associate dean for research at WCM-Q, recalled that the Biomedical Research Training Programme for Nationals has been a very successful initiative, launching many new graduates into a career in research. “These new interns will learn and develop the skills and experience required for a fulfilling and rewarding career.”
