Chad minister backs Qatar’s Unesco candidate

HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s candidate for the post of director general at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), yesterday met Chadian Minister of Tourism, Culture and Artisans, Youssouf Abassalah.The meeting reviewed cultural ties and their role in promoting relations between nations as a main pillar of Unesco’s functions.The Chadian minister reiterated his country’s support for the Qatari candidate, which reflects the depth of cultural ties between the two countries. In a related development, HE Dr al-Kuwari met Aissata Ba Sidibe, Unicef’s deputy representative in Chad and discussed the importance of education in rural and urban areas.Ba Sidibe praised Qatar’s efforts through the Educate A Child programme, which is executed in co-operation with Unicef and the Food and Agriculture Organsation in Chad, noting that the programme is a successful model for co-operation among organisations in addressing the needs of the less developed countries.
