QATAR  |  CeremonySDC marks 20 years of development initiativesUnder the theme “20 years of Pioneering Community Development Initiatives”, the Social Development Centre (SDC) is launching its new visual identity and 2016-2020 strategy at a ceremony today at the Qatar National Convention Centre. This comes as part of the SDC’s continuous pursuit to develop the community services it delivers. The SDC said in a press statement that it had spared no effort since 1996 “to build a stable, self-reliant family concept that contributes to the development of society by empowering low-income and limited-capacity families with the skills necessary to compete in the labour market and improve their quality of life”.QATAR  |  CondolencesUN General Assembly holds special sessionThe United Nations General Assembly yesterday held a special session to offer condolences on the death of HH the Grandfather Emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani. Peter Thomson, the president of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, opened the session to extend condolences on the death of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani to Qatar’s leadership, government and people. He praised HH the Grandfather Emir’s role in Qatar’s development and prosperity. Member states’ delegates of the  General Assembly observed a minute of silence in memory of HH the Grandfather Emir.
