Clashes break out in Corsican city

Clashes broke out between police and protesters in the Corsican city of Bastia yesterday, after hooded youth tossed Molotov cocktails and lit a vehicle on fire, French broadcaster iTele reported citing the prefecture.The clashes began in the afternoon at the end of a demonstration against a ruling last week by a Paris court.The court convicted three young Corsican nationalists of ramming a car into a public building in the small village of Corte in 2012.A few thousand people came out to march in protest of the prison sentences handed down by the court, which ranged between 5 and 8 years, local broadcaster France 3 reported.The broadcaster said the demonstrators were also Corsican nationalists, who support autonomy or independence for the Mediterranean island.
