Jordanians protest gas import deal

Jordanian protesters deploy a giant national flag during an Islamist-led opposition protest against a deal with Israel to import natural gas yesterday in the capital Amman.
Dozens of Jordanians took to the streets of Amman yesterday, protesting against a recent deal to import gas from Israel, the independent Jordanian Al-Ghad newspaper reported online.The protesters gathered following mid-day prayers and chanted slogans against the $10bn deal signed last month, according to the report.Some demonstrators chanted “gas of the enemy means occupation”; “the people want to overthrow the agreement”; and “no to normalisation with the Zionist entity” — a reference to Israel. No violence was reported.Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.However, anti-Israel sentiment has not abated in the desert kingdom, which has a strong opposition movement.Jordan is home to thousands of Palestinian refugees, many of whom hold Jordanian citizenship.
