Death sentence for activist’s murder

A court in the south-eastern port city of Chittagong yesterday convicted five people, including a man and his son, and sentenced them to death for killing Himadri Majumder Himu, after letting loose ferocious dogs on him in 2012, reports agencies. Chittagong Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Nurul Islam passed the order, said public prosecutor Anupam Chakrawarty. The convicted were Shah Selim Tipu, his son Junaid Ahmed Riyadh, Jahidul Islam Shaon, Shahadat Hossain Saju and Mahbub Ali Khan Danny. Junaid and Shaon were tried in absentia. Himu was murdered for his role in an anti-drug campaign in Panchlaish area, Jawed Ali Chowdhury, the sixth prosecution witness in the Himu murder case, told the Chittagong court during cross- examination. Jawed was the general secretary of Shikor, an anti-drug organisation in which Himu was a member. Jawed told the court that he was present when Himu described the incident at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
