Expat jailed for attempt to steal

A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an Arab expatriate to six months in jail and subsequent deportation for an attempted theft from duty-free shops at Hamad International Airport (HIA) while in an inebriated state.Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that the man was convicted of trying to steal a number of goods from duty-free stores after consuming alcohol. He failed in his attempt after being spotted by a salesman there.According to the police report, the salesman saw some items falling from the defendant's bag as he was walking across the duty-free area. He was stopped on suspicion of foul play and checked. The items found included a pair of glasses worth QR3,531, a pair of sunglasses worth QR1,595, earphones worth QR999 and other goods such as a cloth puppet, three fancy pens, a key-chain, rosary, box of chocolates, three perfumes, three chains, four packets of cigarettes, a makeup box and CDs, the report said. The defendant admitted in court that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
