It was a team effort that made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. Mother India Crochet Queens (MICQ), a group of expatriate women in Qatar, led by Subashri Natarajan, has woven together the World’s Largest Crochet Blanket. Guinness adjudicator Pravin Patel said the MICQ blanket, measuring 11,148 sq m, eclipsed the existing South African record of 3,357 sq m, at an event in Chennai earlier this week. Vaishnavi  Kuppuswamy, co-ordinator of Qatar MICQ along with team participants Noorul Firdhouse and  Nikila Ponnuswamy, witnessed the final event on behalf of the Qatar team. Vaishnavi went to Chennai from Doha a month before. She co-ordinated with other team leaders to join the small blankets into a giant one. The weaving together took around 26 weeks of painstaking work by the ladies that resulted in the record-breaking blanket.  Patel said it is absolutely delightful to adjudicate the World’s Largest Crochet Blanket and that MICQ has met all the guidelines of the Guinness board for achieving this marvellous record. He praised the team effort as “amazing”. In the beginning, Vaishnavi was alone. But her passion for crochet making led her to find friends with similar interest. Gradually, the team grew from one to 50-plus members, from all age groups. Qatar MICQ contributed nearly 175 blankets for this record. Each participant was making individual blankets measuring 40x40 in a simple granny square design. The chief guest at the event in Chennai, actor Jayam Ravi, praised the MICQ team’s efforts for this achievement. Team leader Vaishnavi was emotional and shed tears of joy when the official announcement came in. She said that the fact that these blankets were being donated to the needy through NGOs makes her happier than the world record. She dedicated her memento to the Qatar MICQ team members.
