Angelique Kerber won the first set of the Australian Open final 6-4 against an error-prone Serena Williams on Saturday as she seeks her first Grand Slam title.

Kerber broke Williams, who made 23 unforced errors to the German's three, twice before she served it out on 39 minutes -- the first set the world number one has lost all tournaments.
