Recognise and reward employeesDear Sir,The letter, “Make annual pay rises mandatory” by RH (Gulf Times, October 20) is timely and enlightening. As a human resources professional, I have been raising this serious issue at every forum available to me. My point: Unless serious attention is paid by employers to review on a sustained basis their employees’ salary structure and perks, it would be next to impossible to retain talented and trained workforce. Hesitancy to recognise and reward right talents at the right time in the right way may lead to an unfortunate situation of attrition. This will have cascading effects on various spheres of planned activities. It is high time to realise the value and importance of human resources in contributing their mite to the development of this great nation. Human capital’s immense intrinsic value should never be undermined taking into account the long-term mission and vision of any corporate, whether upcoming or already established and growing. About a customer it is said “if you fail to take care of him, someone else will”. The same logic applies equally, if not more, to any talented, qualified, competent and experienced professional who contributes in no small measure to the success of any organisation. Each and every worker is important and to be recognised and rewarded monetarily as well as treated well. This will bring greater benefits to both the employer and employee eventually as well as to this great nation.With various welfare measures being introduced and with several thousand dedicated and loyal workers this country is proud to possess and with the increasing realisation by employers about the pivotal role played by human capital, let us look forward to a welcoming situation under which people from other parts of the world vie with each other to come and work in Qatar.V Kalyanaraman. Time for global interventionDear Sir, Israelis continue to target the civilian community in Palestine. Israeli aggression aims to force people to leave their homes, harassing them and imposing various restrictions on them. The situation in Palestine requires immediate international intervention. The United States and United Nations must play key roles to end the ongoing crisis in the occupied territories. It would be ideal for both the Israeli and Palestinian people to sit together and talk to end the crisis rather than engage each other with deadly weapons.
