‘GCC working on reform in transport infrastructure’

There is a need to enact more legislative reforms in the GCC states in the coming years to further improve and strengthen the region’s transport and communication infrastructure, a senior official has said.Hassan al-Hail, adviser to the Minister of Transport, made the observation at the 20th meeting of GCC transport and communication undersecretaries yesterday.The two-day meeting ends today and will be followed by the 19th meeting of the GCC transport and communication ministries’ committee tomorrow.Al-Hail said Qatar and its GCC neighbours are working together to introduce a series of reforms, which will in long way help put a better transport and communication system in place in the region.The official said that improvement in road and other communication systems will lead to increased mobility of residents not only within this country but also other parts of the region.Al-Hail said the long-cherished aspirations of GCC leaders can be fulfilled only if there is a marked improvement in transport and communication infrastructure across the region. “Once such infrastructure is built across the region’s states, the dream of the “joint Gulf market” as desired by the GCC leaders can be realised,” he said, hoping that the implementation of the GCC railway project will accelerate the region’s economic development.Further, the official said the meeting would seek to address all vital aspects of the railway project and study every topic on the agenda in detail and prepare recommendations for perusal in the 19th meeting of the GCC transport and communication ministries’ committee.
