Nepalese community all set to observe Teej

By Usha Wagle GautamWith Teej, a festival of Hindu women, just around the corner, Doha-based Nepalese folk singers Sharad Pandey, Madhusudhan Dangi and Debika KC have released their Teej-inspired singles. Teej is a festival of singing and dancing. Teej songs have a peculiar tune, and likewise demand a peculiar dance. Singer Debika KC has come up with a single titled Tero tagat mane paiso (your strength is money) that deals with money related hardships, disputes and distrusts in family. KC who has been staying with her family in Qatar for 10 years now said she recorded the single in Kathmandu. “The song is a gift for all non-resident Nepalese,” KC said. The lyrics were penned by singer-songwriter Pashupati Sharma, who has also provided vocal support on the song. Since the start of her singing career, KC has released three to four songs each year. “I celebrate Teej mostly abroad where I perform, and this year, during the time of festival, I will be in Canada,” KC said.Singer-songwriter Madhusudhan Dangi has also released a Teej song titled Ma putali (I am a butterfly). The single is presented by Kamana Music, and is performed by singers Meksam Khati and Amrit Lamichhane. Dangi has been in Qatar for more than four years, and has sung and written more than seven songs. “I didn’t give my own voice to this song as I had some problems,” Dangi said, adding that she plans to record songs in her voice in future. The Qatar-based Sharad Pandey has released Mobile chahiyo malai Facebook chauluna (I need a mobile to use Facebook). Pandey has collaborated with Debika KC on the vocals of this song. “Singing is my passion, and I can’t stop myself singing during the festival,” Pandey said.Basanta Films, a Doha-based Nepalese organisation, is also set to release a Teej song with singer Debika KC. The Nepalese United Society (NUS) is organising a Teej programme on Friday, September 11 at Golden Fork Restaurant. According to Amina Khan, president of the women wing of NUS, the programme will feature 10 performances. Nepalese Women Society (NWS) is also organising a Teej programme on Friday, September 18, at Quality Hypermarket. NWS President Rekha Rai said the programme will include 20 performances by Nepalese singers, including the popular Janaki Magar.
