Tyre shops are expecting brisk business this time of the year as more customers replace old tyres, which is a common practice during the summer season.Ali Akbar, manager of Al-Saad Trading along Salwa Road, said his store has experienced a 35% to 40% increase in sales in the past several weeks.“Other shops could also experience a certain increase in customers at this time of the year since many motorists opt to replace their old tyres in the summer,” he said.According to Akbar, vehicle owners must observe proper maintenance of tyres like regular check of the overall condition of the tyres, the inner and outer sidewalls, as well as the condition of the spare tyre.Aside from regular maintenance, Akbar stressed that a slight change in wheel balancing and alignment could cause significant wear and tear on the tyres.“Motorists should drive carefully especially on rough terrain because a miscalculated bump on rocks, potholes, and other unpaved areas could damage the rims and the vehicle’s suspension. These contribute to wear and tear of tyres,” he said.He also advised motorists to be wary of unregulated tyre pressure, and to consider replacing ordinary air with nitrogen, especially when driving long distances.“Qatar’s road conditions are quite good but when travelling long distances and for a long period, heat affects the condition of the tyres. Using nitrogen and maintaining the correct tyre pressure helps prevent safety hazards such as exploding tyres,” he said.According to another shop owner, there has been an increase in awareness among motorists on the safety benefits of changing tyres, especially during the summer season.“More and more of our customers have had their tyres changed, not only for the sake of replacing them but more importantly because they believe it is the safe thing to do,” a shop owner along Salwa Road said. Asked which brand is recommended for SUVs or sedans plying Qatar roads, the shop owner said there are many international brands available in the market that are suitable for all types of vehicles.“Most shops have a particular brand that they usually recommend to their customers but in the end it all depends on what the client prefers. For example, some clients would prefer summer tyres over all-season tyres,” he explained.“But in my opinion, all-season tyres have a lifespan of around five years before they are replaced. You may get the best brand in the market but if you don’t take care of your tyres, they are not bound to last long,” he added. He also stressed that it is advisable for motorists to observe their vehicles when they bring their cars for regular maintenance.“It helps when motorists are aware of basic troubleshooting tips such as changing a flat tyre, which could come in handy during emergency situations,” he said.He also said it is advisable for motorists to regularly visit petrol stations or garages to check tyre tread depth and tyre pressure. “By visiting tyre shops or service centres at petrol stations, mechanics could help vehicle owners check for signs of irregular wear. Aside from its overall condition, checking tyre alignment could also help prolong their lifespan,” he added.
