The Infrastructure Planning Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP) is currently working on the preparation and implementation of studies that aim to improve the performance of infrastructure facilities and update references and standards currently used in the design of infrastructure facilities and networks. This is being done in order to keep pace with technical developments and meet the requirements of modern and effective infrastructure facilities, according to a statement. The department has completed a comprehensive study on data for rainfall rates in Qatar. The results of the study will help derive the mathematical curves designed for calculation of the rates and intensity of rainfall, which is indispensable for the design of high-end networks that are consistent with the climatic conditions of the country, the statement notes.Phase one of the study has been completed. Phase two assignments include preparation of the Qatar Manual for Rainwater Flooding & Averages in collaboration with COWI. Further, the department - in co-operation with GHD - is conducting a study on the incidence of floods in the country. It aims to identify and assess the associated risks to the population, land and properties and provide decision-makers in the State with the mechanisms necessary for taking proactive planning and regulatory measures, which are required to avert possible damage, identify flood risk areas and develop appropriate mechanisms for the planning and development of such areas. Moreover, the department has established a “data bank” comprising all data related to infrastructure, geo-technical and hydro-geological works at the national level, which have been acquired from both government and private parties, followed by standardisation, evaluation and processing. The said data would be used for current and future projects, besides serving as a guide or for comparative use in the future, in order to minimise the costs and efforts involved in the country’s future projects and avail of the opportunity to disseminate the said data to all projects relevant to the maintenance of infrastructure facilities in the future.
