Large-scale infrastructure development in Wakrah and Wukair

By Ramesh Mathew/Staff ReporterInfrastructure developments will be carried out across more than 16mn sq m in the western areas of Wakrah and south of Wukair, it was announced yesterday.Most of the works are for roads and other related infrastructure in the government’s residential projects in Wukair.The works are to be delivered in three packages, senior Ashghal officials told a community meeting at the office of the Ministry of Municipalities and Urban Planning in Wakrah.One of the major developments is a new 3.65km road starting from the Abdullah Abdul Ghani roundabout to Al Mashaf area in Al Wukair. Work on the road is almost complete. It is expected to be commissioned shortly.With three lanes each on either side, the road will feature signal intersections and a median. The road is being built to ease traffic in Al Wakrah town.  In Wakrah (west), works include the construction and maintenance of old and incomplete roads, construction of pedestrian and bicycle tracks, installation of street lights, signs and landscaping.The works also include the building of a Treated Sewerage Effluent distribution system, storm water collection and disposal networks and irrigation networks. Most of these works are expected to be complete by the last quarter of 2017.It was also announced at yesterday’s meeting that roads and infrastructure works will cover more than 675,000sq m in Wakrah North East. As part of the development, such works as surface water drainage, foul sewer services, pedestrian and bicycle paths, street lights, road markings, traffic signs and symbols, and landscaping will be done.The Wakrah South area will also see infrastructure development works to be carried out over 3.2mn sq m.  Once the works are completed in the third quarter of 2017,  nearly 8,300 residents of the area will benefit.Similarly, infrastructure development works would be delivered over an area of more than 2.4mn sq m in north Wukair.Another major infrastructural development works covering an area of more than 7mn sq m will be carried out in the west of Al Mashaf.The project details were given by senior engineer and Ashghal’s Building Affairs director Abdulla Mohamed al-Ajmi.
