Qatar urges more Darfur peace efforts
QNA/NyalaHE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al- Mahmoud presided yesterday over the ninth meeting of the committee monitoring the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state. In his opening remarks, al-Mahmoud urged all parties to exert more efforts to enhance the implementation process in all its phases.A sustainable peace in Darfur will be possible when local communities are fully mobilised in the implementation process, including civil society organisations, civil administration, traditional justice mechanisms and religious figures, he said.Al-Mahmoud called on parties entrusted with conducting a dialogue to begin the process immediately. He said the voluntary return of displaced persons and delivery of basic services will improve the security situation and help in reaching a comprehensive political settlement. He pointed out that Qatar had conducted several early recovery programmes, including the construction of model villages and the provision of basic services, and signed a $88.5mn agreement with the United Nations for the implementation of these programmes. Al-Mahmoud praised the Sudanese government’s efforts to implement its obligations under the Doha Document, as it has paid 107bn Sudanese pounds of its total obligations. He urged international partners in Darfur reconstruction and development to meet their pledges, saying that any delay in meeting these commitments would have an adverse impact on the implementation of approved projects and also hinder the implementation of security arrangements.
