Second edition of traditional boat race ‘Al Shawaheef’ to take place this weekend

By Sports Reporter/DohaThe countdown for the second stage of the traditional boat race ‘Al-Shawaheef’ in its second edition has started. The event is held as part of the Active Qatar Campaign activities under the umbrella of The Qatar Olympic Committee. The race will take place in the Katara (Gate 20) on January 10, 2015. Ten Qatari teams participate in the ‘Al-Shawaheef’ race: Hal Sharq, Al Waab, Al Khor, the Winner of last year’s competition, Al Dhaayin, Lusail, Al Rayan, Al Wakra, Laffan, Um Al Hool and Al Dafna. The first held stage of the race saw the Al Khor team take the lead with 14’42”. Ten teams from various regions of Qatar had also taken part in that first stage.The Organising Committee and the high management decided of running this year’s event in three stages, although The ‘Al-Shawaheef’ traditional boat race was initially designed to be an annual one-round event, with the objective of accelerating competition between participants while also increasing the award’s value to the winners.
