Bakery inspection: Malpractices found

DohaInspectors from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) recently inspected 217 bakeries and confectionery stores that produce and sell local and other Arabic bread varieties as part of an intensive inspection campaign.Such outlets often sell their products to groceries, supermarkets and hypermarkets for distribution.The MEC inspectors were able to detect four bakeries and shops in Doha, Al Khor and Al Wakrah where specifications were not followed and expiry dates were manipulated, according to a statement by the ministry.The MEC pointed out that the specifications for Arabic bread include the following aspects: the weight of a small round loaf is 71.5gm and the diameter should not be less than 17cm; for small varieties, a pack of 10 loaves is priced at QR1 while the big one - with a diameter of no less than 26cm and a weight of 143gm - the price should be five pieces for QR1.The final product should be completely round and have a fresh appearance, not burnt or looking raw, the statement adds.
