Qatar’s Sheikh Saoud bin Ali al-Thani was re-elected as the president of the FIBA Asia Central Board for the new term 2014-19 in Doha on Thursday.

The 45-member FIBA Asia Elective Congress voted for six of the eight previous members retained their posts, including Sheikh Saoud bin Ali, chairman Xin Lancheng of China, secretary general Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon, treasurer Quek Hiang Chiang of Singapore, vice-treasurer Mahmoud Mashhoun of Iran and women’s representative Noviantika Nasution of Indonesia.

The two new members are Kuwait’s Sheikh Talal Faj al-Sabah and South Korea’s Pang Yul as first vice-president and second vice-president respectively.

Qatar Basketball Federation’s (QBF) secretary general Mohamed Ali Houbash was chosen as the Subzone representative for the Gulf region. The representatives for the other regions are Maruo Mitsuru (Japan, for East), Eric Thohir (Indonesia, for South East), Abhijith Sarker (Bangladesh, for South), Abay Alpamyssov (Kazakhstan, for Central) and Mudar Majdoub (Jordan, for West).

The QBF-hosted Congress also saw the presence of FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann and FIBA Europe president Turgay Demirel.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate Sheikh Saoud on being reelected. We are also very proud to host this FIBA Asia Congress in Doha,” said QBF president and Qatar Olympic Committee secretary general Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani.

“I would like to thank FIBA World secretary general (Patrick) Baumann for his presence. We are also thankful to FIBA Europe President Turgay (Demirel) for attending. I am sure that FIBA Asia and Europe would cooperate closely in future.”

The newly constituted FIBA Asia Central Board also finalised on the hosts of the events in the 2015 FIBA Asia calendar including the 28th FIBA Asia Championship and 26th FIBA Asia Championship for Women, the two events which act as the qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics. China has been awarded to host both these events.

Bangalore in India has been awarded the right to host the 4th FIBA Asia U16 Championship and Jakarta in Indonesia the 4th FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Women.
