The existing sewerage network in Najma can no longer cope with the increase in the areau2019s population.

Work is under way in Najma to replace the area’s sewage network, according to the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).

In a statement issued yesterday, Ashghal said the work had been going on in the area for more than a month and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2015.

As part of the exercise, which is undertaken to develop the sewage infrastructure of the inner Doha areas, more than 1,000 commercial and residential connections in the Najma area would be replaced, it said.

The area has experienced a huge increase in population, which has required the expansion of all existing sewer facilities and their replacement with a higher capacity sewage system, it pointed out.

The new developments would be adequate to meet the sewerage flows of the area for the next 50 years.

The short-term goal of the project is to find a permanent solution for the sewerage water overflow and meet the rising requirements of the population in Najma.

The long-term goal of the entire project is to rehabilitate the sewage network in inner Doha, especially the southern areas where the population has reached close to 1mn.

This project will support economic and social development in those areas through increasing the existing network capacity, developing them and connecting them to more efficient and environment-friendly pump stations with lower emissions.

As part of the project, all old sewerage pipelines measuring 150-400mm in diameter will be removed and replaced with new pipelines with a higher capacity of 200-1,200mm.

This will result in the improvement of sewage network efficiency in the area and subsequently lead to controlling the environmental dangers that are caused due to sewerage overflow.

The project is located in the south of Doha and is bordered by B-Ring Road in the north, C-Ring Road in the south, Al Matar Street in the east and Najma Street in the west.

Works will include replacement of 20km of pipelines and approximately 500 sewer access manholes that allow access to the sewerage pipelines for maintenance works.

Ashghal is currently working on several major sewerage projects with the aim of providing all areas of the country with an urban sewage network, in addition to expanding and building pump stations, ground and surface water projects and maintaining and rehabilitating existing pump stations.
