The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), in collaboration with the Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) directorate at Qatar Foundation, participated in an awareness campaign on ‘How to quit smoking’ at the Qatar Science and Technology Park  (QSTP) recently.

PHCC provided specialised medical staff of two doctors, one dietician and five nurses who assisted QSTP employees and raised awareness about the impact of smoking as well as how to quit it. “We are providing the  attendees with tips for and benefits of quitting smoking and making them aware of the problems that tobacco can cause,” said Dr Eman Mahmud, head of Health and Wellness at the HSSE.

Moudi Hamad al- Hajri, dietician at PHCC said that many people do not quit smoking for the fear of gaining weight as a side effect of quitting. “The most efficient and healthy way for smokers is to quit and do exercises and play sports,” said the dietician.

Qatar maintaining heritage, says envoy

Ali Zainal, ambassador and Permanent Representative of Qatar to Unesco, yesterday said that Qatar is maintaining its heritage and it has its own national vision for development that could be achieved through progress in the areas of education, economy and preservation of cultural heritage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee, Zainal lauded Qatar’s initiative to contribute $10mn to Unesco’s emergency fund. “This confirms the state’s concern over the human heritage in light of the natural disasters, conflicts and wars.”

The envoy said the nature of work in Unesco is a collective action through the study of the projects and programmes that concern to all Unesco member states through the UN General Assembly which is held once every two years and discuss all issues and projects presented by the countries.

Selous reserve on danger list

The World Heritage Committee yesterday put the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania on the List of World Heritage in Danger as widespread poaching is decimating wildlife populations on the property.

The committee called on the international community, including ivory transit and destination countries, to support Tanzania in the fight against poaching.

Covering 50,000sq km, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. The property is renowned for its populations of elephant, black rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus and crocodile, amongst many other species.

It also has an exceptionally high variety of habitats including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps, making it a valuable laboratory for on-going ecological and biological processes.

However, rampant poaching has caused a dramatic decline in the wildlife populations, especially elephants and rhino, whose numbers have dropped by almost 90% since 1982, when the property was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
