By Umaima ShafiqCourt orders compensation for studentsThe Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has ordered the private Velammal Medical College to pay Rs300,000 each to three students after they were denied admission for the year 2013-14. The court said the students were not admitted despite high ranks, requisite marks and choosing the college under the management quota. It added that the college had played mischief by collecting money and asking the students to come days after counselling was over. In a similar judgment, the Madras High Court ordered the state school education department to admit 36 kindergarten children studying in schools run by the Chennai-based Chettinad Foundation in other institutions due to improper accreditation in the CBSE stream. The order was given after parents filed a petition.Girl dies after falling into hospital drainA 12-year-old died when she fell into an open drain by a roadside inside the Christian Medial College hospital complex in Vellore, about 130km from Chennai last week. The girl’s family had come from Jharkhand for treatment for her sister. She had gone out with her cousin and was returning when the accident occurred. Her body was found in the slush near the final disposal plant after a 60-hour search. The district administration took responsibility for the accident and promised to cover open drains. CBI questions staff of Sun and Kalaignar TVsThe Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned former employees of Sun TV and Kalaignar TV, owned by DMK leader M Karunanidhi’s family, into a 2011 illegal routing of government-owned telephone cable wires of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).  The case relates to 323 telephone wires of BSNL being routed to the residence of Karunanidhi’s grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran in Boat Club area of Chennai when he was the federal telecom minister. Six killed in road accidentSix people including a four-month-old baby boy died when their van collided with a bus at Dharapuram-Oddanchatram highway in Coimbatore district last week. The passengers were returning from a temple when van driver Vellingiri lost control. He too died in the accident. Three other women were critically injured and were admitted to hospitals in Dharapuram. Thousands visit Yercaud festivalThousands of tourists from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka visited the 39th annual summer festival at Yercaud hill resort in Salem district.  The festival covers an extensive thematic flower show, folk dances, boat races, healthy baby, cookery, dog show and other competitions. Yercaud is located in the Shevaroyan range of hills in the Eastern Ghats.Child branded with hot ironA child care worker was arrested for branding a five-year-old girl under her care with a hot knife at a government crèche in southern Tirunelveli district last week. The worker admitted to have punished the girl for oversleeping and refusing to get up for meals. The angry parents filed a police complaint and had the worker arrested.
