Over 60 research posters by CAS students displayed

By Joseph Varghese/Staff ReporterOver 60 research posters by students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Qatar University (QU) were  displayed during its Annual Research Day at QU’s Ibn Khaldoun Hall yesterday. A total of 26 were awarded with certificates of merit at the opening ceremony of the event.The Annual Research Day is a special activity organised by the college to showcase graduate and undergraduate students’ research accomplishments. QU president Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, CAS dean Dr Eman Mustafawi, deans and faculty members of other colleges of the university were present in large numbers during the event.   Speaking to Gulf Times, Prof al-Misnad said it was a proud moment for her to experience the outcomes of research at the university. “The level of research at the university is very advanced and creates a lot of excitement among the students. Hopefully, we will recruit them to do their Masters or PhD in the university.“We might even absorb many of the bright researchers as faculty members in the university once they complete their studies. Only researchers can have the passion for mentoring the students in the process and I am sure it will contribute in a big way to the country’s progress towards innovation and research,” she added.Dr Mustafawi said the posters were done in groups and participants were honoured on the occasion. “We honoured two projects from each discipline that included various subjects. These posters were part of the graduation projects and research activities on the campus, which includes undergraduate and postgraduate students.”The dean said of the 26 posters already shortlisted, there will be two winners in science and arts projects at the undergraduate level and one each at the postgraduate level. They will be announced at a special ceremony next month. “This year, we have seen the involvement of more students compared to previous years. It seems every year people hear from other students and get motivated to take part in the research activities. I can observe many new topics, new themes and subjects among the presentations that are addressed to social media, heart diseases, biology and many more, as well as traditional topics that have not been attended to so far,” Dr Mustafawi observed.One of the research students at the event said she was overwhelmed by the response to her projects from the faculty and visitors. “Our project on wind energy as well as its application in Qatar is appreciated by the faculty and visitors. We are sure that the project will catch the attention of people and they will make use of it in the coming years,” she added.
