Qafco marks Environment Day with awareness drive for students
Qatar Fertiliser Company (Qafco) is marking World Environment Day with a three-day series of art and educational competitions for students, which began yesterday at Al-Banush Club in Mesaieed. |
Organisers said they have received more than 500 entries and winners will be awarded in a separate ceremony tomorrow.
The activities include group discussions, presentations and quiz competitions which are all part of the company’s campaign to help create environmental awareness.
The competitions are divided into drawing, art displays on the impact and solutions to global warming, display models, video presentations and live demonstrations.
“We strongly believe that environment education starts at a very young age. Through this event, we intend to spread awareness among children, on the effect of global warming,” said Qafco’s CEO and vice chairman Khalifa al-Sowaidi, who led the inauguration of the event yesterday.
Quoting the environment slogan “Raise Your Voice, Not The Sea Level,” al-Sowaidi reiterated the need for drastic steps to mitigate global warming. He said it was time to speak up and debate on the rising sea levels as an after-effect of massive industrialisation.
Speaking to students of Mesaieed and Wakrah who displayed their exhibits at the event, al-Sowaidi said Qafco has invested in producing aqueous ammonia which is used as an agent for absorbing nitrogen oxide emissions generated from gas use and burning natural gas in power generating stations and industrial plants.
“These campaigns are targeted towards children as Qafco believes that they can make a difference to our present and future,” he pointed out.
Distribution of booklets to students from various schools in Qatar was part of the previous World Environment Day celebrations. These booklets comprised of colour pages, crosswords, quizzes, questionnaires for children of various ages.
Children also planted their favourite flowers as part of the campaign. This activity aims to help a child understand the importance of protecting the trees. The children are then entrusted with the responsibility of caring for their plants within their school.
The opening was also attended by Qafco chief administration officer Hamed al-Marwani, COO Ivan de Witte, chief financial officer Cees Van Amelsfoort, SEQ Manager Mohd al-Eshaq and other senior officials.
