Ex-bank staffer acquitted of theft charge

The Court of Appeal has acquitted a former bank employee of charges of stealing public funds in connivance with others, local daily Arrayah has reported.

The Court of First Instance had earlier sentenced the man, an expatriate, to eight years in jail.

The case involved three persons, including a former bank employee. All of them were referred to court by the Public Prosecution.

The accused bank employee, who was working in automobile financing department, was charged with stealing official documents and a stamp pertaining to his work and keeping them with him even after he quit his job.

The Prosecution also charged him with using these in correspondence with government entities while he was not authorised to do so.

He allegedly helped the second and third accused steal public money through various means. The two other accused were also charged with forgery and connivance in stealing public property.

The Court of First instance had sentenced the second and third accused to three years in jail and ordered their deportation after completion of prison term.
