One or two cases of children with diabetes are diagnosed every week at Hamad General Hospital’s Paediatrics Department, head and consultant Dr Ahmed al-Hammadi told local Arabic daily Arrayah. “The number of children identified with diabetes is increasing not only in Qatar but worldwide,” he said. Treatment using the Insulin Pump, a small computerised device that delivers the necessary dose of insulin at regular intervals automatically, is currently provided to around 100 diabetic children in the country. Dr al-Hammadi said there are currently eight consultants, eight specialists and 45 resident doctors that cover HMC’s various paediatric departments with around 4,000 children seen for medical check ups a month.
