A necklace set of rare pink diamonds, manufactured by major jewellery maker and a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, Gembel European Sales NV, is on display at Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition 2014. The necklace set is priced at QR2.37mn.

Rajesh Rathod (pictured right), an official of Gembel European Sales NV, told Gulf Times that pink diamonds are among the rarest diamonds in the world. “The pink necklace set is a very special one. It consists of a ring, a pair of earrings and a necklace. This is the first time we are bringing this necklace to Qatar,” he explained.

The official said the necklace set is made of different diamonds. “There are 12 pink diamonds as well as 12 natural yellow-colour diamonds. The pink diamonds are not very big but they are natural. The entire necklace set is hand- made.”

He said the price of pink diamond is very high in the market. “Recent auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s saw the prices of the pink diamonds running very high. The pink diamond presently costs about $1mn per carat,” he said.

Rathod stressed that the necklace has 74 carats of diamond in the entire collection. “The necklace has 60.67 carats of diamond while the earrings consist of 11.91 carats. The ring has 3.4 carats of diamond, making it a total of about 74 carats,” he pointed out.

He said Gembel European Sales NV has been participating in the Doha exhibition since 2005. “We are getting a good response from the Doha market, which makes us return to the exhibition year after year. We are also regular exhibitors in many other leading jewellery exhibitions.”

The official also said it takes a long time to make the necklace set. “The first thing is to get the most suitable stones for the set. We travel around various places in search of the best diamonds and it can take more than six to eight months. The manufacturing part takes another three to four months, making it a year-long process,” he added.

Further, Rathod said the pink necklaces are not manufactured in large numbers as they require rare pieces of diamonds. He added that small diamonds move faster at exhibitions as they are less expensive compared to the bigger ones.
