Employees of Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) and its sister company Qatofin, as well as their families, are gearing up to officially attempt to break a nearly 12-year-old world record and make history on the occasion of National Sport Day.

Under the patronage of HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada,  who is also the Qatar Petroleum chairman and managing director, Qapco and Qatofin will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive football passes tomorrow.

The event will take place on Qapco Club’s  football field in Mesaieed.  Employees and their children will participate in the one-of-a-kind competition.

The current world record of 557 passes was set in Hong Kong on May 4, 2002, according to the Guinness World Records website. The event had lasted four-and-a-half hours.

The target is ambitious as each pass needs to reach a symbolic mark. Through this attempt, participants will be able to express their passion for football and showcase their skills and technique on the field.

Officials from Guinness World Records will monitor the entire event.

Dr Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla, vice-chairman and CEO of Qapco and Qatofin, said the attempt aimed to demonstrate that “sport is fun and that collective performance matters”.

He said: “We will be extremely proud if we break the record and bring the Guinness World Record to Qatar. We know it is not going to be easy but a challenge increases our motivation. Our goal is to encourage a passion for sports across generations, especially football, and promote active lifestyles.”

“Driven by its passion for football and looking forward to 2022”, Qapco said it was  actively engaged in supporting a number of football-related activities and competitions. “Therefore, the Guinness World Record attempt is in line with its corporate focus,” the company said in a statement.

In 2011, Qapco and Qatofin together set their first Guinness Record with the world’s largest football shirt.

The upcoming world record attempt is one of the many fun-filled activities lined up for National Sport Day at Qapco Club. “The objective is to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage the daily practice of sports,” the statement said.

More than 4,000 participants, employees and their families will take part in various sporting activities. “Particular attention will be given to children, with a kids’ fun zone and dedicated sporting competitions, to encourage their love for sports and to ensure it becomes an integral part of their daily lives.”

Speaking on the activities of the day and on Qapco’s focus on sports,  al-Mulla said: “Aligned with the principles of the Qatar National Vision 2030, we believe sports will support a sustainable future for generations to come by shaping a fitter nation and a healthier tomorrow. National Sport Day is an excellent opportunity to promote the regular practice of sports among our employees and to encourage them to do the same with their children.”

Qapco’s Women Committee is organising  competitions exclusively meant for ladies.

As part of its fitness drive, the Qapco Club will serve healthy food and snacks throughout the day. Besides, Qapco HSE and medical teams will be on site, offering their support and ensuring a safe and successful Sport Day for all.
