Holders Sadd, runners-up Rayyan post victories

Alpha Bangura scored a mammoth 42 points to power Al Sadd in the second round match of Qatar Men’s Basketball League against Al Shamal yesterday.

The American-Sierra Leonean player scored half of Al Sadd’s points in the team’s 84-71 win at the Al Gharafa Sports Club arena.

Bangura scored 16 two-pointers, a three-pointer and seven free throws, besides coming up with five assists and rebounds each.

Erfan Ali Saeed pitched in with 18 points for the 2013 GCC Clubs Championship winners.

The defending champions scored 20-plus points in each of the quarters to take the match away from Shamal.

For Shamal, Brian McKenzie and Jonathan Huffman scored 21 points each with Tyvon Williams scoring 14 and Tommy Smith 12.

In the second game of the day, last year’s runners-up Al Rayyan came up with an all-round performance to down Al Ahli 104-70.

Davidson Jermareo (19), Zuza Jurica (16), Hassan Mohamed (15), Salim Abdulla Malek (14) and Yasseen Musa (13) got into double digits for the eventual winners.

For Ahli, Mofunanya scored 24 points with Moto Barsiyak Vitti and Hassino Ndyae pitching in with 15 points each.

Today, Al Arabi will take on Al Wakrah in the early game at 5:30pm while Al Gharafa will face Jaish in the 7:30pm game.
