Cameron Campbell emerged as the overall winner of the seniors’ category of the second event of the GMC Second Triathlon TriSeries Doha, which is being hosted by TriClub Doha at Aspire Zone on November 29. |
Campbell finished the course in 01:01; 03s. The top finisher in the juniors’ category was Jay Toet, who finished the course in 14:01s. Wendy Mountford clinched the fastest woman title of the event . She finished the course in 1:16; 01s. Juniors completed a course spanning a 100m swim, 2km cycle and 1km run, while the seniors completed a course covering a 500m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.
GMC is the title sponsor of the series for the 2013-14 season which is being held using Aspire’s indoor pool and outdoor areas. This is the first such dedicated triathlon series being held in Qatar and the organisers are hoping it will grow into a very popular attraction for people in Qatar.
Mohammed Helmy, Group General Manager, Mannai Automotive, said: “Mannai Auto Group is happy to have successfully hosted the first two races of the 2013-14 GMC TriSeries Doha calendar in partnership with Aspire Zone and TriClub Doha.
The feedback from the participants has been positive and we hope to build this momentum by welcoming more enthusiastic fans and participants for the two remaining events of the season, the first of which will be on January 25, 2014.”
Philip Templar, Director of Venues & Events at Aspire Logistics, said: “We are delighted to be playing host to the first triathlon series in Qatar, it is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring athletes of all ages to test their fitness levels. This partnership is a testament to Aspire Zone Foundation’s ongoing dedication to promoting healthy living to all members of the local community.”
The series is designed to welcome members of the public to compete in the three-discipline sport and this season, the races are held in separate categories.
The TriSeries is designed to appeal to both beginners, who may be participating in their first triathlon, and more experienced athletes who want to build-up to the full Olympic-distance event in April 2014.
The final two legs of the GMC TriSeries Doha will be held next year, in January 2014 which is a three quarter event covering a 750m swim, 30km biking and 7.5km run.
The final round of the GMC series will be held in April over an Olympic-length course covering a 1500m swim, 40km cycling route and a 10km run.
Triathlons, which feature swimming, cycling and running stages, are gaining popularity among fitness enthusiasts in Doha and, in addition to the GMC TriSeries, the TriClub hosts many such events for its members throughout the year.
