Benefits of pistachios

Dear Sir,

In reference to the article “Myths and facts about diabetes” (Gulf Times, November 11),  I would like to point out that simple dietary changes can lead to multiple health benefits to diabetic patients. Diabetes could be controlled and the propensity for heart disease may be reduced, for instance, by adding pistachio nuts to one’s diet.

A  study, recently carried out by the Diabetes Foundation of India  and the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation, has found that nuts (mainly pistachios, almonds and walnuts) have beneficial effects on glycemic and lipid parameters.

Pistachios have a low glycemic index, are naturally cholesterol-free and are source of protein, fibre and antioxidants, the study found.

These properties make consumption of pistachios potentially useful for those at risk for obesity and heart disease.

Based on this study, one can say that pistachios provide an excellent snack option, especially for those at risk of metabolic problems and diabetes.

QTA efforts paying off

Dear Sir,

It is great to read that the efforts by Qatar Tourism Authority to attract more visitors to the state are paying off (“Tourism growth boosts Qatar hotel revenue”, Gulf Times, November 11).

The growth in tourism reflects the increase in the revenues of Qatar’s four- and five-star hotels.

Regional visitors have increased by 20%, with the greatest increases coming from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Simpler entry formalities  for visitors will give a further push to Qatar’s tourism growth.
