New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials walks in a tunnel some 200ft below the Central Park to announce the completion and activation of the Manhattan portion of the city’s third water tunnel (Tunnel No.3) yesterday. Today’s activation of the new third water tunnel, a project first proposed in 1954 and started in 1970, which will feed water to the entire borough of Manhattan for the first time, will allow the city to take the ageing Tunnel No.1, which began continuous operation in 1917, offline to be inspected and repaired for the first time in nearly 100 years.
